Kids, Tramadol & Codeine. Do you know the risks?
On April 20, 2017 the FDA issued a warning that the pain medications tramadol and codeine should not be prescribed to children under 12. Some children metabolize these medications differently which can cause breathing difficulties and even death. There is a justified caution in prescribing stronger pain pills to children when they are in pain and codeine and tramadol are often seen as “safer” medication compared with stronger pain pills like morphine or oxycodone. The key point is if you are taking any medication, have a conversation with your health care provider about the risks and benefits of the medication.
