Why is it important to check your CRP?

There are blood tests that can monitor the level of inflammation in the body. C-reactive protein (CRP) is a marker of inflammation and is derived from dead or dying cells.  Normal CRP is between 5-10 mg/L.  Compared with another marker of inflammation, the erythrocyte sedimentation rate or ESR, CRP increases faster and resolves faster.  In other words, CRP is more responsive than the ESR.  CRP is likely elevated in conditions such as cancer, cardiovascular disease, inflammatory bowel disease, renal failure, obstructive sleep apnea, and rheumatoid arthritis.

If you are modifying your diet/exercise or lifestyle consider discussing this lab value with your health care provider to track progress.
