What is Postpartum Depression?
Giving birth usually results in a huge surge of mixed emotions for the mother. While there are immeasurable joy and elation of delivering a child into the world, there are complicated feelings like anxiety, fear, stress and an unexpected surge of depression as well.
While it is common to feel like this for a week or two, a prolonged feeling of depression may mean the mother is experiencing postpartum depression which, if left untreated, could trigger a major depressive disorder. Postpartum Psychosis, another extremely rare disorder, is a more severe side-effect of birth.
It is important to understand that having postpartum depression doesn’t mean you are a bad mother. It is just a severe side-effect or complication of giving birth that a lot of new mothers go through.
Some Common Postpartum Depression Symptoms Include:
- Irritability
- Mood Swings
- Reduced or Irregular appetite
- Anxiety
- Prolonged sadness
- Insomnia
How Is It Treated?
Postpartum is treated according to the severity of the symptoms. The two main kinds of treatment are therapy and medication.
Therapy could involve joining support groups for new mothers experiencing similar feelings or it could also mean seeing a therapist or psychologist who could provide counseling. Medication usually involves antidepressants and is usually recommended for more severe cases. Some antidepressants could have side effects like dizziness and a reduced sex drive, while others could be harmful if you are breastfeeding.
